The workshop will combine work on the potter’s wheel with hand-building and slab techniques – often used together. John will demonstrate a variety of approaches designed to open up fresh, experimental directions in your own making.

We’ll begin with the Japanese kurinuki technique, in which a solid block of clay is carved and shaped. As the course progresses, we’ll move on to larger, sculptural vases created by joining wheel-thrown and hand-built sections. John will also demonstrate asymmetrical bowls and cups, as well as generous serving platters thrown on the wheel. After each demonstration, participants will be encouraged and guided in adapting the techniques to their own practice.

On the first evening, John will give a presentation about his life and work in Japan.

This will be an inspiring, hands-on workshop that invites you to experiment and explore.

John Dix has been working with clay in Japan for over 35 years. His work reflects a deep connection to Japanese ceramic tradition, while still bearing the mark of his training in the United States. In this workshop, he invites you to venture into new territory and develop freer, more expressive forms.
